The North Carolina Courage announced they had terminated the contract of head coach Sean Nahas effective immediately on Wednesday night. Assistant coach Nathan Thackeray will serve as acting head coach for the team’s match against the Houston Dash this weekend. The North Carolina Courage remain focused on the continued development of the team and maintaining a professional, competitive environment for players, staff, and supporters. In a press conference Thursday morning, Courage sporting director Ceri Bowley and the club’s director of communications, Jake Levy, addressed reporters, but declined to specify either the reason for, or the process of, firing Nahas. Bowley said repeatedly that there were a multitude of factors that went into the decision, but would not name any of them — including whether there were any investigations concerning Nahas, or if the players had any say in the move. Nahas joined the Courage as an assistant coach in 2017 upon the team’s relocation from Western New York. Following the termination of then-head coach Paul Riley in September 2021, Nahas was named interim head coach. He earned the players’ support during the remainder of the season, and the club officially made him head coach by December 2021. The Courage currently sit just outside of NWSL playoff contention in ninth place. Including his interim tenure as head coach, Nahas had a 36-35-19 record with the Courage. The team’s decision to terminate Nahas’ contract has raised questions about the future of the club, with many speculating about the reasons behind the move. Despite the uncertainty, the North Carolina Courage's players and staff remain committed to the team’s goals and are looking forward to the upcoming match against the Houston Dash.
